On the edge of liminal grounds is a cotton tapestry, dyed with pigments extracted from natural materials and constructed using crochet to abstractly represent and map landscapes. The work is the result of a process involving the observation, selection, and collection of natural materials and their pigments from neglected natural areas. Natural colorants, such as chlorophylls and betalains, were extracted from collected samples of grass, leaves, and soil—often considered weeds or undesirable—and combined into patterns and color compositions to create an imaginary representation of these areas.
The approach to collecting materials for the tapestry-making process was inspired by Gilles Clément’s notion of the Third Landscape, a term referring to fragments of untended natural spaces that harbor biodiversity despite lacking function and aesthetic resemblance. By transcending conventional boundaries and perceptions of landscapes as purely physical spaces, the Third Landscape is seen as a part of the environment entrusted to the unconscious—a realm where events accumulate and manifest in seemingly indecisive ways.
