Haunting Whale

Video Work

This is a joint project with Zenzai Collective

From the open sea of Amami Oshima Island to the disjointed and dazzling landscapes of Tokyo, there is the Haunting Whale, in the midst of a long-lost journey.

Haunting Whale is an exploratory video work that investigates how mythical storytelling and visual narratives help humans comprehend phenomena beyond direct perception; from mega-cities no resident ever sees in full to environments changing faster than memory can track and infrastructures too vast to be grasped as a whole.

The work approaches this question through an encounter with a whale, which serves as both its methodology and central figure. Whales are immense in physical scale, yet their presence extends beyond their bodies through the fascination, symbolism, and imagination humans project onto them.

Situated in Japan, where unique geological conditions host diverse whale species, and where traditions of image-making intersect with centuries of whale worship and folklore, the work explores how people respond to ungraspable realities and what these acts of imagination leave behind.
